The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited UBC's Okanagan Campus on Tuesday, September 27, as part of their 2016 Tour of Canada.
Dr. David W. Strangway (10th President, 1985-1997)
Dr. David W. Strangway was honoured for his outstanding contributions to UBC at the 2016 Research Awards Reception. In her remarks, President Dr. Martha Piper credited Dr. Strangway for transforming UBC from a good provincial university into a research powerhouse.

Musqueam Post
Also known as the Musqueam sʔi:ɬqəy̓ qeqən (double-headed serpent post), this impressive, 34-foot tall post carved by Musqueam artist, Brent Sparrow Jr., will serve as a permanent welcome to all visitors to UBC's Vancouver campus and as a reminder of our relationship with the Musqueam people who were here long before UBC's history began.

Musqueam Post dedicated at UBC Vancouver campus
The Musqueam people and UBC acknowledged their developing partnership on April 6, 2016 with the dedication of a striking cedar post installed prominently on the Point Grey campus, which is located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people.
Carved by talented Musqueam artist, Brent Sparrow Jr., the post tells an origin story of the Musqueam name.

Tuum Dressed: 100 Years of Fashion at UBC
From swimsuits with skirts to spiral perms and bell-bottoms, we take a look back at a century of style at UBC.

1915 winter wear: wide-brimmed hats, fur stoles and huge hand muffs to match. The men in uniform are Canadian Officers Training Corps officers.
Chests couldn’t be bared and swimsuits had “skirts” to preserve male modesty in the early 1920s.
Summer dress code in 1924: linen trousers and afternoon tea dresses, perfect for garden parties on the lawn.
Elegant tennis attire looked smart on and off the courts (1924).
Women’s shorts weren’t very short in the 1930s, but the men’s surely were.
Post-war casual in the 1940s: vests and pullovers for men, high collars and oxford shoes for women.
Waves and pompadours are quintessentially 1940s. Norman Mackenzie in his version of academic dress.
1950s saw the return of cinched waists and layers of tulle. Cheerleaders line up in circle skirts and letter sweaters
Looser shapes inspired by Mod Style in the 60s made it possible to adopt the latest dance craze.
The beehive in the 60s, more beloved than the bouffant for its long-lasting qualities.
The iconic “Cat-Eye” frames in the 60s ranged from conservative to wildly embellished.
International students wear the traditional attire of their country.
The 70s showed bell-bottoms, flares, cut-offs and the plaid leisure suit.
Guys and dolls of the 70s: long straight hair or a shag, middle part preferred. Plenty of facial hair for the guys.
The 80s ran the gamut: somber turtlenecks and houndstooth combo to spiral perms gone wild.
The 90s had a penchant for grunge, layering festive vests/dresses over t-shirts, and floral maxis.
Things got a little confusing by the 2000s. Which decade is it anyway?
Some days you just wear the same outfit two days in a row…
… Or a decade in the case of Dave Tompkins. (Late 1990s through 2000s)
They say imitation is sincerest form of flattery.
Not even Thunderbird was immune to the changing fashions of the time.
Beards and Moustaches
As men everywhere grow moustaches and raise money for Movember, UBC looks back on 100 years of facial hair. UBC professors receive funding from the Movember campaign to support research and work on men’s health issues.

100 Years of UBC Library
Library opens
The Library opened in October 1915, with nearly 30,000 volumes in its collections. Today, the Library has more than 7 million items, and offers a variety of services.
Stacks
In the 1940s, the Library was serving 9,300 students in a single building meant for 1,500. Today, the Library has 8 locations on campus, plus two off-campus locations.
Study spaces
Library reading rooms have always been a staple for students. Today, the Library offers group study areas, silent study spots and computers for students.
Campus aerial
Construction of the Main Library, now named the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, was completed in 1925. When it first opened it was one of only three buildings on campus.
Reference desk
Library services were initially offered at the reference desk, today librarians are accessible via online chat, and also visit classrooms to provide support as well.
Catalogue
Today, library collections are accessible online, through the catalogue, Google Scholar, and digital collections portals. The Library currently has more than 1.4 million e-books available.
