Branford Marsalis’ jazz roots run deep. This acclaimed saxophonist is the eldest brother of the illustrious New Orleans jazz family that includes patriarch Ellis and siblings Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason. But the three-time GRAMMY Award winner and NEA Jazz Master is not content to rest on his heritage. Following stints in the legendary Clark Terry’s band, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and brother Wynton’s groundbreaking quintet, he formed his own quartet which quickly became the standard against which other ensembles are measured.
Branford Marsalis talks about his musical upbringing and fascinating career path in a conversation with UBC School of Music’s Richard Kurth.
