While I graduated from UBC in 1967, I returned as Head of the Language Education Department (then LED, now Language and Literacy Education) in 1986 after earning a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1971 and having taught at the University of Manitoba for about 16 years. While at UBC I was instrumental in founding Ritsumeikan/UBC house and developing and teaching was done by LED staff. I also initiated the development of the doctoral program in the Department of Language Education.
